A qabchal or jacket, quilted and slightly ornamented, was worn underneath the body armour. Hanging from the cuirass was generally a skirt, which was at times of velvet embroidered with gold. It was even worn by men of European descent when they entered the native service. The use of armour was never discontinued. Officers of a certain rank were required to produce it at the time of inspection, subject to a fine if it were not forthcoming.
